Property Description
This typical Breton house, built of random stone, is a rural idyll. The land and outbuildings are perfect for keeping horses and there are workshops, and even a small house for renovation if the fancy took you. The property is in good, comfortable order, refurbished and ready for immediate use.
On the ground floor is a very spacious, open-plan room which works really well as the kitchen, dining area and informal living room. Just a couple of steps up is a further sitting room, with a cosy wood-burning stove. Still on the ground floor there is a shower room, separate WC and a useful utility room/store.
Upstairs are two bedrooms, one on a mezzanine level. The master bedroom is particularly attractive with the ‘A’ frame rafters fully exposed. There is a further shower room with WC and a dressing area. The house is bright and has a hard to define, but warm atmosphere.
The surrounding fields, ponds and stream are a feature of the property as are the outbuildings and stables.
Huelgoat means “high wood” in Breton which gives a clue to its position. Situated in Western Brittany, it is a place beloved of tourists, yet remains attractive and unspoiled. There is a good selection of quaint shops, cafés and restaurants. The local galettes (buckwheat pancakes) and a jug of cider are a good mix! The town lies on a huge artificial lake, built to provide water for the local silver and lead mining industries. Today it is great for fishing (carp, pike, tench and perch).
The property is easy to reach from the UK. There is an international airport at Brest and a ferry port at Roscoff (crossings from Plymouth). They are both an hour’s drive from the house. The ferry port at St Malo is about double the distance but might be more convenient as the crossings are from Portsmouth.
